What would you think you would look like on Venus? You would be very frail, washed out, a photo from an album. That’s how Ray Bradbury pictured Margot, an elementary student, in “All Summer in a Day”. Venus always rains and no light appears in the day and it’s about 9000° Fahrenheit, but one day every several years there is a day with two hours of light. While that was going on and her classmates were outside, Margot was in the storage closet. This was an irony because of all the events that happened to Margot in this story had to do with irony.
One of the most important thing that help analyzing a story is the plotline .The first thing that happened to Margot is she didn’t have any friends in her school. She usually stands and stares at the other kids having fun. Then she speaks up about the sun coming, but a boy named William didn’t want to believe her so they locked her in the storage closet. On the irony plotline the first thing that happens is world in chaos. She is grasping for sanity, in the closet, while her class is outside having the best day of their lives. When the sun was gone they let her out of the closet and her class had felt sorry for what they had done. Margot had lost her sanity at that point.
Although the plotline is very important for analyzing the short story the characteristics and purpose are also play a big role. Two characteristics are the main character is powerless and makes the wrong decisions. One decision she should’ve not made was to let them take her to the closet. After reading this story it made our lives not so bad that there is one day of warm weather and we missed it. This is one of the purposes of this story to think our life is bad.
The main character also gives us the symbolism of irony. Margot was worn out, dull, and probably creepy looking. Some other symbolism in the story was that there was storms and thunder. There was also a closet that she was locked in that represents irony. I think that irony is mostly creepy dull places, times, weather, colors, and people.
“All Summer in a Day” has a terrible ending for the little girl. She stood up for herself and then she got locked up on the only day in seven years that there is no rain. She did the right thing to speak up but the wrong thing to not fight when she was going into the closet. That was one of the wrong decisions she made that makes it an irony.
