Choices

A child enters a candy store and lights up the whole store with his grin. He glances around at the labels. Dum Dums, Toostie Rolls, Nerds, Lemon drops, Twizzlers, Rock Candy, and millions more. "How many things can I get mom?" he said overwhelmed with all the options. "Only one." the child frowns and starts another lap around the store, and all he thinks is what am I going to choose. Life is full of choices. There are little ones like what candy should I buy or to big ones, such as should I let my sister kill herself. In My Sisters Keeper Anna has a sister, Kate, who has cancer and is sick of ruining everyone's life, especially Anna's. But the thing is, should Anna choose to give her a kidney or not.

Kate loves her sister and would do anything for Anna. She is the only person who understands Anna and the one who doesn't think of her as the girl whose sister has cancer. But Kate wants to be dead so that Anna  could do whatever she wanted to like play hockey, move away, and not be known just as Kate's sister. So Kate tried to commit suicide but couldn't do it so she asked Anna to not give her the kidney. Even if it meant killing her, Anna would do anything for Kate to make her happy.

That didn't necessarily mean Anna would be happy. Everybody thought Anna didn't want to give Kate her kidney. Then they find out Anna would donate everything to Kate, she would want herself to have cancer instead of her. She wants Kate to live and experience everything that she can. Anna would have no one to talk to if Kate was dead. In the book it seems like Anna had no friends. There was this one date she had but other than that Kate was her only friend and nobody wants to lose a friend.

Tough decisions...touch choices.   Anna needs to make a choice. It's not about Dum Dums or Tootsie Rolls; it's about life or death.

It's Not Summer Without You Point of View

In It's Not Summer Without You, is told in the perspective of Belly at the age of 16, most of the time. It switches through different ages of her life in some chapters, so some chapters are not as reliable as others. When she was 10 she kept talking about the bad side of one girl because Conrad was practically drooling over her while Belly is in love with him. She did not talk about the good about the girl. Belly is more reliable in her 14-16 years because people who are older tend to be more believable, that is why I believe that Susannah would have another interesting perspective of the story.
Susannah is Belly's mothers' best friend. She would have a major twist in the story because first of all she has cancer. She would talk about the challenges of it and how her kids would react to the news. Next she would talk about which boy is for Belly. She swore that Belly will marry one of her boys. She would also be more truthful of situations.,

My Sister's Keeper Prediction

In the book My Sister's Keeper I believe that  Anna will not win the case, but her parents would understand what she is going through and Kate will believe she has a choice. Kate will eventually die by Anna not donating her kidney, because Kate loves Anna and knows she wouldn't be able play hockey which is her passion. The movie, The Last Song, had Ronny and her little brother discover that their father has cancer. They try to stop it, like how Sara tries to stop Kate's leukemia, but he died in the end. Most books or movies that contains cancer has that person dying.

Abstract on The Body

In the essay The Body, by Danielle Van Dusen the author believes that Henry and his family are all rats. She believes this because rats wouldn't care as much about a body in their home. Also the rats would store it around the house because they have a use to eat the body. That is why it is getting smaller.

Judging People

They have razor sharp teeth in 48 rows. Eyes as dark as the night itself. Swimming away is useless when the beast can swim 20-24 mph. But behind that, is there a warm hearts under sandpaper like, shark, skin? People nowadays judge others based on their appearance and what they had done in the past. Whenever people see sharks they believe they are going to rip their face off. We also judged people like in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. In Maycomb, people should've learn to talk bad about people before you even met them.

During the time this book was written there was a lot of racism. So in court, people would've rather believe a white woman with a unlikely story than a black man with a perfect alibi. Tom Robinson was a victim of this. Dependable people in the story like Atticus, Scout, and Jem believed and knew Tom was not guilty. They didn't judge him by the color of his skin like everyone else.

Everyone else also believed that the Cunninghams had a bad social status. All of Maycomb knew that the Cunninghams were a very poor family. People were very cautious of who they hung around with because image was everything at this time. If you were having fun with someone who is poor then that would be humiliating. Although  the Cunninghams were poor, they had pride. Money was offered to the Cunninghams ,but they would say no because they didn't make the money themselves.

Everybody has flaws, even sharks. People are afraid of them because of their appearance when in reality they are harmless creatures. They only attack if you look like its prey, that's why surfers get attacked. Surfers look like sea turtles when they are in their boards. So people are afraid of sharks for the wrong reasons, just like Tom Robinson and the Cunninghams. We should not judge books by their covers.

Scouts Point of View

In this book To Kill A Mockingbird, It is in Scout's view. Scout tells the story at different ages, but it starts out as an adult and tells about her brother, Jem, breaking his arm. Then she goes back to the age of 6 where it all starts. As a 6 year-old she would misinterpret things, making this a non-reliable source. One example was when she told Ms. Caroline that Will Cunningham is poor. As a adult you would find that really rude and think that she was making fun of him, but to Scout she was telling her who Will is.

Later in the book she grows older and reaches the age of 9. By now she understands more things, but not much about the town and racism. The case with Tom Robinson came up she asked her dad, his lawyer, if he had a chance to live. He said no. She didn't think that was fair, but in this time a white woman's word is taken more than a black man's.

I believe the story would be more reliable in Atticus's point of view. He understands what the situation is and he can understand the society in this time. He is also a good adult. Most of the other adults didn't believe in the innocent, except Atticus.

Cunninghams and Tom Robinson

There are some people in Maycomb that are good people, that they believe that the Cunninghams  are good people and that Tom Robinson is not guilty, but other than Jem, Scout, and Atticus, they don't believe in both. In third or fourth chapter of the book Scout and Jem tell Will Cunningham that he could come over for dinner. Once they brought him to their home, Aunt Alexandria didn't want Will there. But them Tom Robinson's case came up and she believes that he is just a regular person we should treat him the same. So why are the Cuunninghams any different?

Prim in the Room

Authors Note: In class we had to pick a character from the novel we are reading and I decided to use Prim from the Hunger Games. I might add more t this in the future because there is so much I could do.

She walks into the room. Beautiful blonde hair tries to disguise her tears. She wipes eyes and tries to show no fear just like her sister. Her eyes have dark circles from the sleepless nights since the reaping. Colors are lost in her summer dress that has patches covering rips and tears. She tries to stand tall but there is an awkwardness in here stance. When she finally lifts up her head she looks around, amazed by all the technology and food we have. From lack of food she walks around the room as weak as a new-born baby deer. She recognizes a mural we have above our cabinets, she says her father used to whistle to these birds and respond back with the same tune. I ask her what her name is and she replied Prim.

Should I Speak?

An average child starts talking around the ages 2 or 3. After they know how to talk in full sentences and you will give them anything for them to shut up. But what if they didn’t even try speaking? Melinda, in the book Speak, has no desire to talk because she thinks there will be consequences. Everyone who had spoken in the book had to suffer something. For Rachel it was 500 word essays for the class, David had to go to the principal’s office, but Melinda was raped. Was the better solution to not tell anyone or should have been to speak up?

After Melinda called the cops, everyone at the party got busted. She didn’t tell her classmates why she called the cops and so her whole grade despises her. Her colleagues would have understand why she called the cops and she would still have them.  Melinda didn’t think about what would have happened and much better her life could’ve been if she told the truth. If she had told the cops she would have sympathy from her classmates, more friends, and she would talk more.

If she had talked more, she would also have a better family. Before the incident, Melinda didn’t say her parents hated her. On page 70, Melinda believes that her parents don’t love her as much as they did before, because she is just like her mother and father. She explained this during a biology lab with apples. It smelled like the time she picked apples with her family and they were all happy.  But after the party she didn’t have great communication with her family.

Talking is a very important skill in life. It helps expressing yourself and haves opinions. If you don’t talk, then you will have trouble in life like Melinda.

Lack of Love

Love has no happy ending, because love doesn’t end at all. If there is an ending then it is not love. In the books The Christmas Carol and Fahrenheit 451 both relationships ended with Mildred being burned and Belle leaving. Scrooge and Montag both had someone they thought they loved, but they just slipped away.

Belle was Scrooges girlfriend at the time and they thought they were each others soul mates.  Big plans they had for when they would get married, but Scrooge had found a new love, for money. The same happened with Montag and Mildred. They thought that they would live a happy marriage then Montag was starting to have an opinion about books. There was a spark of their interests that made them drift apart. Also, Scrooge and Montag both had lost them in the book, but they lost them in different ways.

Montag lost Mildred when he had kept a stolen book and then she was burned. Belle had the choice of leaving Scrooge when he had an addiction for collecting money. Mildred made no choices or changes while Belle did. Another difference was Scrooge I believe had once loved Belle as a teenager. No love was found in Montag's and Mildred's relationship at all.

Love is hard to find nowadays. Forty percent of marriages end in divorce, because people think they are in love or married too young. At least Scrooge and Montag didn't suffer a bad marriage for much longer.

Parents and Melinda

"I bet they'd be divorced by now if I hadn't been born. I'm sure I was a huge disappointment. I'm not pretty or smart or athletic. I'm just like them -- an ordinary drone dressed in secrets and lies. I can't believe we have to keep playacting until I graduate. It's a shame we can't just admit that we have failed family living, sell the house, split up the money, and get on with our lives."

This is found on page.70 in the book Speak. This shows how she feels about herself and her parents. She says that her parents hate her because they are alike. She is nothing but ordinary. She knows it too. She feels like she's is not special and believes that other people believe she is not special either. I'm confused if her parents truly love her or not because they do nothing with her and don't communicate with her. But they want her to get better but the parents are not letting her speak.

Lack of Love

Love has no happy ending, because love doesn’t end. But if it has a bad ending then it’s not love at all. There is no possible way to be unhappy and in love. This sounds a lot like Scrooge in The Christmas Carol and Montag in Fahrenheit 451. They were unhappy and lost their loves in interesting ways.

Scrooge was supposedly in love with a girl. They were in love since they were teenagers. Since Scrooge got interested in money instead of her she left so it wasn’t true love. Montag thought he loved Mildred but he wanted to love Mildred. He didn’t love her because they had different beliefs. She liked the government and Montag was starting to go against it. They both thought they loved someone but once they were out of their lives, they didn't seem to miss them as much as they thought they did.

They both had lost they’re wives to money and then fire. Another difference is Scrooge loved something other than his wife instead of Montag who just was uninterested in her. Also Montag wanted to love Mildred and he tried to, but you can't force yourself to someone. Scrooge just didn’t care about his wife after he was addicted to collecting money.

When you don’t have love in your life you are not happy. Love is hard to figure out but once your find who you love, it's easy to understand.

Fahrenheit 451 Response

"It's a lot of water poured down the spout and out the bottom, and them telling us it's wine when it's not." This was found on page 30 and 31 of Fahrenheit 451. This I believe is telling about people lying about something and lying about it a lot. It is explaining the government at this time I believe because Clarisse, Montag's neighbor, isn't a fan of the government and believes they are telling a lot of lies that affect their future. The lie is how books are felonies and they believe it makes the people think and in this time that is bad.

Retelling Harrison Burgeron

In this world everyone is equal, but equal as in strength, beauty, intelligence, and being athletic. This happens when the government has people wear handicaps. Everyone went along with the government except Harris Bergeron , but he paid the ultimate price; Death. The saddest part of this was that his parents are too dumb to remember that he is dead.

The Niece

Although Scrooge doesn't know love as well as money, he does know beauty when he has seen it. On page 73 in The Christmas Carol, Scrooge sees his niece in-law for the first time and realizes that she is more beautiful than he had expected. He is stunned and mesmerized with her beauty. In the book Scrooge thinks,"With a dimpled, surprised-looking, capital face; a ripe little mouth, that seemed made to be kissed—as no doubt it was; all kinds of good little dots about her chin, that melted into one another when she laughed; and the sunniest pair of eyes you ever saw in any little creature’s head." This explained how pretty her features of her face were pristine. This struck a feeling in Scrooge that maybe love is not terrible and he had realized that his nephew was smarter than he thought.
